September 2024: NFL Fantasía is BACK – Reaching A Million People with Videos – Aloha Shirt Coming Soon

OH YES!

Start writing soon.

I haven’t written as much as I said I would. I only have 4 stories in the San Diego Reader published this year. One of them was a cover. I like that cover. I like almost all my cover stories.

There is another story credited to this year, but I wrote it in 2023.

The San Diego Magazine also ran two stories that I wrote. Then… I stopped.

I stopped writing.

For magazines. In my blog. In other places.

I just do one minute videos on TikTok and Instagram and I reach way more of an audience than I ever have. The internet is crazy. But over half a million in two different Instagram accounts, add more with TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube and shit… I reach a shit ton of people every month.

It’s finally paying off. But I know it can be more. And just like the career in writing just snowballs until it pays more, so is this sort of career of content creation. The more you do it. The more it pays. The more recognized you get.

The more money?

Yeah. It looks like that.

New shirt is dropping SOON!!!

I sold out all the Ballena shirts (except 2 XXL and 1S) but people still ask for more Ls!!! I will do another batch soon. But first, new design is about to drop.

I wrote the script for the next design already. This will go on a nice video of me wearing the shirt, video of where Aloha used to be, and old pictures of the place.

This is the text:

Aloha Bar, originally The Aloha Cafe, opened in 1928 and it was the first pre-tiki bar in Tijuana. Because the H is silent in Spanish, many locals called it “aloa.”

The bar was first opened as The Aloha Cafe during Prohibition in 1928 by Fernando ‘Frank’ Blanco Cota. He’d previously lost The Anchor Cafe in a 1927 fire. Both catered to the US Navy crowd. Cota was born in Ensenada, Baja California, but attended school and lived above the border in San Diego. His place was connected with amateur boxing, promoting bouts between Tijuanans and Americans held in the Aloha Cafe Arena.

The U.S. federal prohibition of alcohol ended in 1933, with California following suit on April 8. A mere two months later, 150 businesses in Tijuana had closed, including 60% of the bars.

As a result Cota regularly advertised the liquor and dancing of his place to San Diegans, beckoning them to experience the racy Honolulu Trio and their ‘latest hula thrills.’ The only things tiki were some decorations, the name, and the hula. Everything else screamed Tijuana tequila bar. No rum there…

Large tropical murals by San Diego artist Russell Dale Moffett (Island Cafe, Sherman’s, Paris Inn, Eddie’s Cafe, Tropic Cafe, Mexican Village and Hillcrest Bowl murals) graced its walls for years.

The legend narrates that a woman danced with the devil at the end of the 70s. She started to float and noticed the man she was dancing with had hooves for feet. The bar was set ablaze.

Many rock bands, including those of Carlos Santana and Javier Batíz, played at The Aloha. It became a disco in the 1970s—and a strip club in the 1980s (notorious, along with The Long Bar and Club Bambi).

The bar caught on fire several times in its history.

In February 2011 it burnt down almost and left it unrecognizable except for the neon sign. In 2018 it was fully demolished. When the property owner was clearing out the building, Russell Dale Moffett’s forgotten murals were found rolled up in the attic. Some have subsequently sold at auction for tens of thousands of dollars…

This 4×6-foot mural from the Aloha Club in Tijuana sold at auction in 2005 for $17,820.

It later became “Downtown” a touristy spot with cheap beer that reminiscences downtown Las Vegas.

NFL!

It is the season of NFL!

I like my team a lot. I was 12th pick and ended up with Saquon who I always like having in my team. And now as an Eagle. I don’t like the Eagles, but because I got that pick, I went Eagles heavy with Jalen and Smith as well. Puka Nacua was my second pick and he already got injured, he looked promising. The rest of the team looks solid: Mostert, Kittle, Kirk, T. Spears, Watson, J. Williams, McConkey, Coleman, Allgeier, Koo, and the Miami defense.

Some of them meh and might drop soon. But a lot of solid and promising.

I’m beating my brother’s team this week. He was first pick. He still has McCaffrey on his team. I have a 25 point lead and I still have Kittle I hope I’m okay.

The end of August was better than the middle of it.

My mother-in-law got surgery and she is doing fine. Not to disclose details, but it was 95% cheaper than it would have been in the United States. Even with insurance. Her injury happened in America. She endured 16 hours in a car to come back to Tijuana to see the doctors here. Brave woman.

I started playing basketball again. I have some anger issues. And I have horrible stamina. I can barely play 5 minutes without feeling like I’m going to die. That’s what happens when you are near 40 and the only workout you do is a few push-ups daily to maintain somewhat of a body.

I’ll play more basketball. I’ll workout more.

And my brain sometimes says “Hey, you should join a gym,” whenever I walk by one. But I know I won’t.

I just keep telling myself one day I will.

I haven’t touched my camera in months. What happens when you let your Lightroom account expire? Well, apparently they give you 30 days for free. Because I switched debit cards, my account expired. And after a few emails of them reminding me about my payment, they emailed me saying I got gifted 30 days. Thanks, Adobe! After thousands of dollars spend just so I can process raw pictures.

I haven’t used my camera, I still don’t need Lightroom. But I have a photoshoot in November. And I should start shooting again.

No writing. No shooting.

Only touring.

Asian Invasion tour went great. Here’s the video:

No pictures. Just video. Like everything today. That’s why I don’t need Lightroom.

Things happened that are not on that video. Those stories might be for Tijuana Adventure book 2.

That video wasn’t very popular. But so many others are.

125k views is a lot. I’ll to keep replicating the recipe.

It’s hot as fuck in Tijuana. Supposedly, the last day of this heat and then it cools down.

My girlfriend doesn’t like it that she tries to hug me while sleeping and I push her away because it’s too damn hot. Sorry, mor. Soon, it will be the other way around.

How’s that going?

Great!

It’s been a year! Crazy! But I feel regular about it. Regular good. Like everything keeps flowing in the right direction. Or so I think. Every once in a while there are some small fights. But nothing alarming. I love her. And I can’t complain.

I only I wish I had more money. So we could go on more vacations together. At least to Ensenada. Which might be next.

And Mexicali, but that might be a solo trip I take. Copa Baja and Mexicali Beer Fest again. Just like the previous year, but with more perks because now they have stories written about them. More writing. I should do more writing. And more photos.

And fucking more videos because 2024 and the future.

But for now. Survive this fucking heat. I’m going to order a big shrimp cocktail and mix it with beer and watch NFL.

This blog post needs a picture and it feels incomplete. So I won’t post it until later. Draft for now.

McCaffrey didn’t play. I won the first week of fantasy football. My friends want me to write a summary in Spanish. And I shall.

My friend and editor in Spanish, Karlha, asked me to write my top 13 albums from 2000 on forward. In Spanish. And I shall.

The top 13 musicians of 2000 on forward in no particular order for now. Soon, I’ll organize it and write a paragraph in Spanish:

  • Hella
  • Battles
  • Tera Melos
  • Louis Cole
  • Domi and JD Beck
  • Crumb
  • Piglet
  • Clever Girl
  • Elephant Gym
  • DJ Perro
  • The Advantage

I’m missing two to make it to thirteen. I’m sure it will come to me. And one or two might be dropped from the list. Picking an album from any of those bands or musicians will be easy.

Edit: Tigran Hamasyan has to make the list. And perhaps System of a Down… That’s 13.

Fantasy Football en Español!!!

Semana 1.

Lion King 116.18 vs The Mongooses 114.72

Uff.

It’s Tuesday!

It’s not as hot anymore, but it’s still plenty hot. I don’t have much to do until my tour this Saturday. This is when I should be making more money. Via writing, photoshoot, tours, or a fucking regular job!

I hate downtimes. I’m alright with money right now, but I want to buy shit. More specifically, a new iPhone and Ray Bans with camera.

I recommend reading the book Ketcel.

The main character is Luna Teschner, a female version of me (in a way). And she records everything wearing special eye contacts. Ray Bans with camera are basically that. They will be great to gather so much material! I know it only records up to three minutes, but that’s all I need. No more recording with my phone, just look and record.

Weird future.

But that’s where we going.

I woke up to over 20 comments on a video I posted months ago. It almost has 500k views. Reaching around a million people via online is weird.

I’ve been reaching thousands for years with pictures and text. But video… That’s new and it reaches way more people.

This post needs a picture. I rarely take pictures. I don’t have new pictures.

Here’s a black and white selfie of me with myself.

I’m painted in two murals. Always a fun fact on my tours.

Thanks for reading. Buy my shit. Follow my media.
