Life Update and Reddit
I haven’t been able to post on my blog as frequently as I want since I’ve been getting busy with life. I now work for a website about soccer and it has kept me busier than I’d imagined. I am also giving guitar lessons and hope to do more of that. A month ago I did a public AMA (Ask Me Anything) on reddit.com, and I was really happy with the result. Since then I have become an avid redditor and it helped to answer the most frequent questions I usually received in a public forum. I have receive a lot of other questions that were not on that AMA, so please feel free to contact me at anytime if you have any questions or to keep asking on the AMA. Most importantly, the AMA reminded that working as a paparazzo gave me the chance to meet and take pictures of very awesome people (especially musicians). I have seen hundreds, if not thousands of celebrities and I have most the pictures I took in my hard drive (I’m sure I took over 100,000+ pictures). To top the list is Paul McCartney, Tom Morello, Henry Rollins, Morrissey, and many more. I also saw a lot of hot girls (celebrities) that I thoroughly enjoyed talking to while taking their pictures. These include a lot of Victoria Secret models, reality tv stars, and gorgeous actresses (I mentioned my biggest crush Natalie Portman before).

My intention of keeping this blog in orderly timeline from 2007-2011 proved to be harder than I originally thought. Next on the timeline would be when I saw Jennifer Aniston and my thoughts about her (they are not good). But I decided to take a break from the timeline and give you some pictures and stories of the people I truly admired. I consider myself really lucky of seeing them in person and snapping away. It is easier to post about stuff I want instead of forcing myself to write on the timeline of my life, however I’m still trying to be concise and will give dates of all the pictures I post (preceded by the story of how they came to be).

Paul McCartney
I saw him in three different occasions, all of them arriving at LAX. The first time I saw him was on February 5th, 2009. I was at LAX for a departure of Shia LaBeaouf, I had no idea Paul was going to arrive at the same time with girlfriend Nancy Shevell.  Shia and Paul actually ran into each other in the elevator and Shia gave Sir Paul a handshake (Shia was also in disbelief in seeing the legend in person, the video was on TMZ). Needless to say, there were other paparazzi there, around five of them and getting better pictures than me as I struggle to cope with the realization that Sir Paul McCartney was in front of me and that my original task of getting pictures of Shia was not a priority. I recovered my senses when he was walking out of the elevator towards his limousine,  I ended up with a worse angle than my competition but still got decent pictures. He was a joy to take pictures off, he smiled for everyone, even gave a friendly handshake to his driver, other staff and anyone else that stretched his hand (I wish I did). Here are the pictures of that night:

He looked straight at me and then made a funny face. Then looked at me again before greeting his driver and finally getting into his limousine.

The second time I saw him I was really nervous. It happened on March 26, 2010 and I was completely by myself waiting for him at LAX (or so I thought). I saw his staff getting ready for his arrival by the doors, ready to take him to his car and not cause a scene. I hid behind a huge pillar between the airport door he was coming out from and where his car was going to be waiting at. When he came out, I kept my cool and kept my distance shooting with my long lens with no flash despite the lack of light. Out of a different huge pillar came another photographer who also thought he was alone (frenemy, competition from Splash). We kept shooting and quickly exchanged words in how disappointed both of us were for making this even non-exclusive. My competition quickly switch to video and started interviewing him (smart move). Paul was as cool as before, we talked to him for a while and he joked around with us. This time I did have a chance to shake his hand before he got into his car, a blue corvette. The pictures of my almost exclusive:

The last time I saw him was on May 25th, 2010. This time, however, everyone knew he was going to be arriving from LHR (London). So countless paparazzi, autograph collectors and fans were waiting for his arrival. He came out of the gate and confronted the mass in a very cool demeanor as he made his way to the same blue corvette whilst holding his electric bass (he even posed with it!). Here are the gangbang pictures of that day:

Paul came out and pose with his bass. That dude next to him is an autograph collector and just wanted to be on the frame. Paul stopped and posed again, but I was behind another photographer, and then I finally got a nice full frame when he was going to the driver’s seat. None of the other photographers expected him to get to the driver’s seat, or the blue corvette for that matter.

Closing thoughts: Most people think paparazzi are annoying assholes that all celebrities hate (and many times this is true). Newsflash, Sir Paul McCartney has handled them perfectly for decades now. The first paparazzi encounters were because of The Beatles (of course they weren’t called that back then), but basically the same thing (in smaller volumes). It was awesome to be able to see him in person and have the opportunity to take his picture. He is one of my many highlights in my years as a paparazzo and I am really happy that I got to take these pictures. Hope you enjoyed the pictures and the stories.

(Donald Faison, Zach Braff and Bob Saget) He Sucks Dick for Coke

Hey, remember how in my last post I said I was going post about a real celebrity…. Well, I lied. Two days after I saw Ashley Tisdale and got excited over nothing, I saw some girls getting excited over someone worse. It was after shooting the guys from Scrubs that I walked back to terminal 4 to use the bathroom. Donald Faison arrived with his best friend Zach Braff and girlfriend of the time and future wife CaCee Cob. Donald was really cool with me, he even joked about trading cameras and took a picture of me. Zach on the other hand was a bit of a dick and walked away from the pictures.

Anyway, after shooting them and on my way to the parking lot I saw two girls super excited fanning with their hands one of their friends who sat down and started crying from excitement. You know when girls get over excited and start to cry and fan themselves with their hands like that would help in any form. I approached the girls curiously and I asked what was going on. That’s when they pointed over at the other side of the terminal and told me that Bob Saget was standing over there waiting for his bags. I started laughing, and told them they just missed the guys from Scrubs. The girls got super excited and started asking me questions and were in shock that they were talking to a paparazzo, obviously it was their first time in Los Angeles.

I went over to where Bob was standing and took a couple of pictures. Then he spotted me and I greeted him, told him I was a fan of Full House (and I am) and took a couple of flash pictures. He then proceeded to get into his limousine. A year later I saw him again, but this time I didn’t bother taking his picture. His picture don’t sell for much, and he was already on his way to his car, but I did yell one thing at him and that was “Hey! Bob Saget! You suck dick for coke.” If you don’t get the joke, you need to watch Half Baked. He smiled and waved at me, and those were the only times I saw Bob Saget. Later I found out that he uses that bid on his comedy act, and of course I’m not taking any credit on it, maybe a lot of people do yell that at him, but it does make me laugh that I also got say that to him.

Here are the pictures that I took that day. Pictures of Donald Faison, CaCee Cobb, Zach Braff and Bob Saget from June 30th, 2008.

Donald spotted me right away, then while he was waiting for his bags to drop down to the carousel he took a picture of me taking a picture of him. Zach didn’t have a cool attitude from the start and avoided me. I took a picture of him checking out a blonde girl while he sat on the carousel. When they were walking towards the exit, Zach walked away from his friends and tried avoiding being on the picture. Donald told me he hates getting his picture taken.

(Ashley Tisdale) Getting Excited Over Nothing

Well, what can I say about Ashley Tisdale? Like I mentioned before, I had no idea which celebrity was who when I started this job, and I guess I still have no idea who Ashley Tisdale is, besides her work on High School Musical. I have never seen High School Musical either. I’ve watched one scene via youtube and it was Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron singing (who I also saw a lot). Actually all the kids in that movie were somewhat important for whatever reason. I just know that if I saw them you had to take a lot of pictures, and that’s what I did. Ashley Tisdale by far being the least interesting of the bunch. I have no idea if she’s still relevant today (probably not). All I know is the first time I saw her I thought I had scored a massive sale, but instead it was just a white girl holding a puppy, though it did print a lot.

It was June 28th of 2008 and I’ve been working as a paparazzo for a bit over a month and mostly at LAX. Malak was “training” me in the art of shooting celebrities, so we spent a lot of the time in the airport. That day we had Vanessa Minillo and Ashley Tisdale to worry about, while Vanessa was departing in one terminal Ashley was arriving in the other one. We spotted Vanessa and started taking pictures, but I knew Tisdale was arriving soon so I told Malak I should cover the other flight while he kept working on Vanessa, so we split. I headed over to terminal 5 arrivals to wait for Tisdale and there she was coming down the escalator holding the most adorable puppy. Her mom and her assistant were behind her and I was nervous about doing all the work by myself. I took as many pictures as I could, ended up taking over 150 pictures. She stood by the carousel waiting for her bags (which happened to be a lot of bags) and then waited curbside for her limousine. That whole time I just took pictures and pretended I wasn’t even there. Never said anything to her or to her mom or assistant (newbie mistake, celebrities are much nicer when you greet them). Nevertheless she was smiling and the pictures turned out great.

I got way too excited landing this exclusive photo session with Tisdale that I felt the need to call my boss and tell him what happened. I told him that I just got Ashley Tisdale exclusive holding her puppy and looking happy. I honestly thought I just got a great photo session and felt the need to tell him everything to which he replied with indifference “okay”. Then I realized that my work was actually not important at all, it was just Ashley Tisdale in the airport holding her puppy (by the way, the puppy’s name is Maui, useless information you learn at the job). I saw that the picture printed in several magazines, especially the magazines for teens and it also went into a lot of different blogs.
These were the picture (June 28th, 2008):

BG 08-6-28a BG 08-6-28b BG 08-6-28c

Needless to say, I saw a lot of Ashley Tisdale through the years. A lot of the times in the airport but also out in Los Angeles. I used to go to a certain area in LA to hunt for celebrities in which a lot of them were neighbors. Next to Tisdale’s house was Haylie Duff’s, and around the corner was Hilary Duff’s. A block away was Jennifer Love Hewitt’s home and turn around the corner and you would find Miley Cyrus’ house, next to it, Steve Carell’s.

Ashley Tisdale:

The next time I saw her was on July 9th, 2008. She was coming back from Hawaii and landed at 4:00 a.m. I didn’t want to work, she didn’t want me to be there, and for my surprise there were 4 other paparazzi in the scene. She covered her face with a giant bag the whole time and no one got a picture of her face, except me, I rolled on the ground and managed to capture this:

Then on November 8th, 2008 again coming back from Hawaii. To be more specific the island of Maui. Get it know? That’s why she named her puppy Maui….

BG 08-11-8

On February 2nd, 2009 I followed her from her house to the 101 Cafe in Hollywood. She had lunch with her agent and nothing happened at all. 5 other paparazzi were there, we were all disappointed that we wasted our time waiting for her to come out of the Cafe for shitty pictures.

Who knew that Ashley Tisdale sang and had a band? I didn’t, and probably no one else did, but apparently this is them departing with her on October 29th, 2009.

Arriving with her boyfriend (no idea who that is) and her family on December 13th, 2009 from… you guess it right, Maui! A lot of paparazzi were on the scene, I couldn’t get a good picture.

There’s a lot of tricks to getting a good picture at LAX, to get this angle you have to know the airport fairly well. She was surprised to spot me there on May 19th, 2010 (with her mom Lisa).
NPG 10-5-19

Didn’t I say I saw her a lot with her puppy? Here she is again on May 27th, 2010.

This time she had an assistant carry her puppy for her (inside the bag). This was on October 18th, 2010.

Here she is again with Maui flying out. Isn’t it great to know that a dog flies to more places than you do? October 24th, 2010
NPG 10-10-24

If you wonder how we know that she’s going to be at LAX, sometimes is this obvious. A driver holds a sign that reads A. Tisdale for her arrival on February 9th, 2011. Yes, a lot of the times the driver, the limousine company, the airline or other sources tell you her exact flight number.
NPG 11-12-13a NPG 11-12-13

And finally… sometimes she has to wait to check in for her flight (most the time assistants do it for her). March 3rd, 2011.
NPG 11-3-3

Thrilling right? The sad part is that I still have more pictures of her at LAX and other places, but they were even less exciting than the ones I posted. I promise that next post will be of an actual celebrity. In the meantime, enjoy the pictures of Ashley Tisdale.

(Natalie Portman) My First Disappointment and My First Car Chase

I should start by saying that I’m a huge Natalie Portman fan (her real last name is Hershlag, something I’ve known since I was 14). As a teenager I was completely in love with her, and not because of her great acting, but because my biggest crush in school resembled her. Needless to say, I had posters of Portman in my room (it started with a Queen Amidala poster). I also started watching all her movies just because I thought she was the prettiest girl in the planet (still think so). But when I first saw her, I was really disappointed, and not because she didn’t look like her pictures, but because she hated me (she hates paparazzi).

After working on Jessica Simpson in San Diego my agency had me working at the airport a lot. My co-worker Ivan quit the agency to join a different one and left the company car behind, which was given to me. It was a charcoal 2008 GTI (Volkswagen) which I named “Carl”. I went to the airport virtually every day to find celebrities. The same week I saw Natalie I also saw Bobby Brown, Daisy Fuentes, Jessica Biel, Jim Belushi, Lauren Bacall, Mario Lopez, Mariska Hargitay, Patrick Dempsey, Spencer and Heidi Montag (ew), Ty Pennington, William Shatner and Zooey Deschanel. If you know what you are doing you can see a lot of celebrities at LAX in a single day, but this post belongs to my dearest Natalie.

On June 17th, 2008 my agency sent me to the airport not to take pictures of Natalie Portman, but to follow her home. It was going to be my first time following a celebrity ever and they sent three of us for the job. The team consisted of a pretty diverse group Malak (from Iraq), Hamo (from Armenia), and myself (American/Mexican). Malak was the one to be inside the airport while Hamo and myself were going to do the follow (in different cars). We communicated by Nextel to coordinate and Malak was to tell us the car and what part of the airport they were at. I was on the lower level for arrivals and Hamo was on the upper level for depatures (since celebrities can go either way). The flight arrived and it was time for action.

I parked near terminal 5 while Hamo was on the upper level circling around and Malak looked for the limousine. Suddenly I saw Natalie’s old boyfriend, Devendra Banhart, waiting by the escalator on the lower level. I radioed in my partners and told them I spotted the boyfriend waiting for her. They weren’t fans of Natalie and had no idea she was dating Devendra so they ignored my call. Then I saw her coming down the escalator carrying Whiz (her puppy). Devendra went to hug and kiss her and I tried taking pictures from my car. I called Malak and told him he was missing all the pictures and got mad at him for not spotting her. He came rushing down the escalator with his flash camera on hand and started taking pictures of them in their faces, obviously they didn’t like this. That’s when they split and Devendra went to get his car to pick her up curbside while she waited for her bags on the carousel. I really wanted to take her picture, but once she sees the photographers she shy’s away and makes it really difficult to get her picture. I gave up and went back to my car before they gave me a parking violation and i was ready to do the task that was at hand, follow them.

Devendra parked in-front of my car, he drove a 500D Turbo-Diesel Mercedes Benz. I was behind him ready for the follow and Hamo was circling around the airport to get behind me. Natalie got inside the car and there were never any good pictures of them together but the chase started. Devendra knew we were following so he didn’t make it easy to keep up, especially for my first time following and I didn’t know Los Angeles that well (or at all). I followed them outside the airport up Lincoln Blvd and soon Hamo caught up with us and he took the lead. Devendra suddenly turned into a CVS parking lot, crossed it full speed and went on the other direction, I was too slow to follow but Hamo wasn’t and kept behind them. For the next 20 minutes I was lost in Los Angeles trying to catch up with the follow, Devendra took no highways and went straight through Venice Blvd. I kept getting pressured from Hamo to get behind them and help with the follow that I even ran a couple of red lights, but it was no use, they were far ahead from me and Hamo had it under control. He finished the rest of the follow all the way to Los Feliz and I returned to the office to deliver my pictures and then went back to work to LAX.

Here are the pictures of that day:

Natalie Portman:

The next few times I saw Natalie Portman it was weird and she always avoided the camera. Though all I wanted to tell her is how big of a fan I was and how much I respected her, I never got the chance. One time I even saw her crying because we were there taking her pictures, it was weird and I felt horrible, but I’m sorry to say that it is the price of fame. Most actors that have been working since they were very young hate the paparazzi, and Natalie is not the exception. Though in reality a lot of the actors are really respectful to photographers and treat us really nice, obviously the media never shows this side of the job.

This was on April 7th of 2009. There was another photographer there (that you can see in the background). This was the cleanest shot I got.

I took this picture on May 24th, 2010. I knew she was going to shy away from the camera, so I crossed the street and hid behind a post while my friend tried to take pictures of her inside. She hid in the corner and faced the window not knowing I was hiding in the other side. When she saw me she got really angry and never looked up again. This was the cleanest shot that we got. Again, all I wanted to tell her is that I was sorry, but that the people want to see pictures of her and if it wasn’t me, it would be someone else.

zNPG 1-4-11
This was one of the first pictures ever of her pregnant on January 4th, 2011. Her bodyguard was waiting for her to arrive, she saw me but didn’t stress out like she did before and allowed me to take a couple clean pictures. When she got in her car I thanked her but I really doubt she listened to me. This picture got printed in several magazines and even made it to newspapers around the world (I saw it print on the New York Post). I also saw it a lot on the web, here’s a sample of what it looked like in JustJared and People Magazine:

The pictures above were taken on February 7th, 2011. She was very pregnant and the media was going crazy for pictures of her. I believe she finally understood that it was really difficult to avoid the paparazzi and just made her way through the airport without caring if we were there or not (A lot of photographers were there and she was followed from her home).

zzzzNPG 2-24-11

The last time I saw her was on February 24th, 2011 when she was still pregnant. Here she is arriving with her dog and Whiz her puppy. Ok, that was mean, but I’m really jealous of Benjamin Millepied for marrying the girl of my dreams. He was never nice to photographers either, but why would he be, he is not famous, just married a famous person that also hates photographers.

I doubt Natalie will ever read this, but if she does I want her to know that I’m sorry if I ever cause her any stress and that since I was a young kid I listened to a song by a band called Ozma, in which they sing about being in love with her as well (song here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81G4_9Ddg8A ). I always wondered if she heard that song.

(Jessica Simpson) Graduated College and Started My Paparazzo Job

I graduated in May 2008 from Saint John’s University in Minnesota and I was moving to Hollywood, Ca. for my new job. My brother got a two bedroom apartment on the corner of Curson Ave. and Rosewood Ave., rent was $2,000 dollars which we split 50/50 though he had a bigger room. First order of business was talking to the bosses and figuring out how I was going to work independently. They wanted me to have my own company car, phone, and have my own photography equipment. The next day Ivan (guy I worked with) picked me up to get my license at the DMV and to buy gear from Sammy’s Camera. They bought me a Canon 40d with a 70-200mm/2.8f lens, filters, memory cards, straps and a camera bag (I already had the camera I took to college as my flash camera). It was going to be a while for them to give me a company car, so in the meantime I was supposed to work with my brother, but he was a freelance then and decided not to work, but opted for going to San Diego to visit my other brother.

We drove over to San Diego and I brought my new camera with the long lens to play and practice and he brought his flash camera with the short lens for fun. On our second day in San Diego, the bosses called my brother and told them that Jessica Simpson was headed to the airport that we needed to cover it. We told them that we were in San Diego and that it wasn’t possible for us to cover it, but it turned out that’s what they meant. Jessica Simpson was flying out of the San Diego Airport with Tony Romo towards Dallas, TX. We were at the beach when we got this call, and our small vacation suddenly turned into serious work.

We rushed to San Diego Airport from Pacific Beach while my brother still talked on the phone with my boss over the details of the flight, and then we hit traffic. It seemed hopeless that we would get any pictures since we were far from the airport and the flight was departing soon. After a while of battling with traffic we were near the airport ramp when we saw a black Lincoln Navigator with the windows down. My brother drove next to it and we saw Jessica Simpson inside. We followed the car to the airport and parked in the curve right behind it and then she came out. We were both coming from the beach so we were wearing sandals and swim trunks, but we started snapping away. They were checking their tickets out at curbside and Tony Romo wasn’t letting us take a clean picture. Then they walked in and had to make their way through the airport, we needed a clean picture of them together. My brother tripped while walking backwards and taking pictures that he threw his sandals to the side and continue the action shoeless. Jessica was nice to the camera, but Tony Romo was shying away, though we did the best we could to get a two-shot of them together.

Our pictures were everywhere and I got a full page print on my first day at work and my brother got the cover on US weekly magazine. The rest of the week they had me working on the airport in Los Angeles and I took pictures of the following people: Cindy Crawford, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Lauren Conrad, Megan Fox, Spike Lee, and Tim Meadows. Not bad at all for my first week working as a paparazzo (my Spike Lee pictures also got printed).

Me holding the US Weekly magazine where my picture got printed back in June 16th, 2008. Picture from December 27th, 2012, I bought magazines that had my picture in big print and this was my very first one.

Jessica Simpson:

Jessica is one of the celebrities I saw the most at LAX throughout my career. She definitely has the most frequent miles on her card than anyone else. I saw her at least once a week. Sometimes I got amazing pictures of her smiling at me exclusive, a lot of the times she avoided us completely that we couldn’t take a good picture, and other times she was just surrounded by paparazzi. I have over 30 folders and more than 3,000 pictures with her name on from many different days. I collected what I think are the best and wrote short stories of what happened that day.

These are from the main story in San Diego, taken on June 1st, 2008:

This picture was taken August 31st, 2009, and though it looks like she’s waving right at the camera she was waving at a group of teenage girls that yelled “we love you Jessica Simpson”. I saw the group of teenage girls all giddy about the paparazzi on the scene and I told them that they should yell that they love her and I got the picture exclusive though there were over 15 photographers that day (it printed in several magazines).

Taken April 11th, 2010 this picture is the perfect example of how celebrities can ruin a great set of pictures and make the paparazzi worthless. On one of my slowest days ever I went to the airport that day looking for Ted Danson when I suddenly saw Jessica’s bodyguard and hid at the distance waiting for her to appear. She’s been avoiding the paparazzi for quite a while that her picture was worth getting, especially exclusive. Then I saw her limousine pull far away from the airport’s exit, and since they didn’t suspect any paparazzi to be around she came out of the car and took a long walk and I got a perfect set of pictures. My pictures sold to several magazines but they were canceled last minute because she went on twitter and posted pictures of her during the flight wearing a wig! My pics were ready to be printed and they were already paid for when the magazines asked for their money back because she thought it would be funny to post some twitter pictures of her with short hair. The magazines picked up the twitter pictures instead of mine, since twitter pictures are free.

April 21st, 2010 Jessica Simpson arrives with Ken Paves (she flies with him a lot). The wind caught her dress and Ken quickly grabbed it to not let it fly up, though in the picture it just seems he is checking her ass out. A lot of photographers were there that day.

On July 14th 2010 Jessica Simpson arrived at night time and almost ruined my chances with a pretty girl I was hanging out with. I remember it was a Wednesday and I worked that morning on Sandra Bullock and I had nothing going on for the rest of the day. Out of nowhere this really cute girl called me and told me she was in Venice beach and asked me if I wanted to hang out. I told her I was supposed to be working but the day was pretty slow so I could hang out as long as I stay near the airport just in case.
Things were going great between me and her that we were cuddling up watching a movie with a bottle of wine, and then my phone rang. My boss called me and told me Simpson was arriving at that very moment and that I needed to cover it. I told my date that I had to go to work that we should continue it some other day… but she wanted to come to work with me and see Jessica. We got to the airport at the nick of time but more than 40 photographers were there, I knew most of them, and they saw me with a pretty girl so they caused a scene and started taking pictures of us (mostly of her).
After that Jessica came out and these were the best pictures I got that day. I went home with her but I needed to edit and send the pictures to my office right away and it was late. When we got back to my place the pretty girl said goodnight and I never saw her again.

September 18, 2010 Jessica arriving with Eric Johnson a couple months after they first started dating. I got this set exclusive.

October 10th, 2010 Jessica departs and puts her high-heels on an airport crate. US magazine (and others) love this type of pictures for their “celebrities are just like us” section. They also love if a celebrity holds their boarding pass with their mouths, no matter which celebrity, but if they put their boarding pass on their mouths its going to get printed on a magazine.

Yet again arriving on December 1st, 2010.

The last time I saw her was on January 4th, 2011. There were a lot of photographers that day but no one could get a picture because she wasn’t wearing any make up and didn’t let them, but she never saw me on one of my favorite hiding spots in LAX and I got clean pictures of her looking…. well… like that.

That’s it for Jessica Simpson, and its a lot. I saw her constantly on my years as a paparazzi. When she was ready for it, she was extremely nice and smiled for the camera, when she didn’t have make-up or she wasn’t ready it was a nightmare to try to get her picture. A lot of the times I got shoved by her bodyguard or other members of her crew, but almost always I got a good picture of her and her pictures sell well.
